   SEPTEMBER 2008

AIR RACES

The Reno Air Races are September 10th to 14th, and we are in need of volunteers.  Volunteers are needed to help assemble the Air Race Posters and volunteers are also needed to help sell the posters at the Reno Air Races.  If you are able to help with this please turn in the form which was sent home last week.  If you need another one, please stop by the school office to pick one up.  We would love any volunteers who could come in and roll posters for us.  Thank you.

FAMILY DAY

Family Day – A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Child , is a national movement to remind parents that what their kids really want at the dinner table is THEM!

This year Family Day is celebrated on September 22nd.

New this year, you can make your Family Day commitment by registering at TuneInToKids.org for a chance to win a celebration dinner with special guests Washoe County School District Superintendent Paul Dugan and celebrity chef Jennifer Bushman; Jennifer will prepare a unique dinner especially for the family.  In addition, a Grand Prize Package valued at $200.00 will be awarded.

To start the Family Day celebration early, enjoy Kid Stuff Saturday at the National Auto Museum on September 20th from 11-4.  For more information, call (775)333-9300.

We want to hear from you about your Family Day experience! Post your comments on TuneInToKids.org, and you’ll be entered to win one of three family cooking classes at Back of the House cooking school, valued at $140.00.

               CIRCLE DRIVE THROUGH

                            In front of school

This area is for the dropping off and the picking up of students and Emergency Vehicles ONLY! A licensed driver must stay with the vehicle at all times. This is for the SAFETY of our students.  Please DO NOT PARK in red or yellow zones. Your cooperation is appreciated.  Thank you.

IMPORTANT LUNCH CHANGES

As of August 25th the Silver Lake Elementary School will no longer be able to provide cheese sandwiches for students who do not have money in their accounts or have not brought their lunch from home.

In an effort to turn no child away from lunch, Silver Lake will be providing one cheese sandwich per student per year in case they forget their lunch.  The money for this was made possible because of a generous donation.  So if your child forgets his/her lunch, they will get one cheese sandwich and water one time only.  Please make sure that you keep sufficient money in your child’s account by calling the school at 775-677-5400 and ask for the kitchen to check your account balance.  If your child brings cold lunch, please make sure that your child remembers his/her lunch every day.

A hungry child will not be a successful learner, so please help us to make sure that your children have a lunch or lunch money every day.  We appreciate your cooperation and assistance in this very important matter.

FUN WITH WORDS

Newspaper learning

With thousands of words in every issue, newspapers are a great way to build your youngster’s reading skills.  Grab a paper, and try these activities.+

Matching game: Have your child cut out several photographs and their captions separately.  Mix them up.  Matching the captions and the photos will improve his reading comprehension.

Scavenger hunt:  List items in the newspaper (car ad, crossword puzzle, weather forecast), and ask your youngster to find and circle each one.  He’ll build research skills as he looks through the pages.

ABC order:  Together, find the names of 5-10 countries, states, and cities in headlines or stories.  Let your child copy each one onto an index card and arrange the cards in alphabetical order.  This will help him practice spelling and learn about geography.
